What Are Autoflower Cannabis Seeds?
Autoflowering cannabis seeds develop into plants that flower automatically, making them easier to grow and more beginner-friendly.
Whereas photoperiod strains require a change in the light cycle to induce flowering, autoflower plants simply surge from seed to harvest with no intervention needed.
Autoflower weed seeds contain genetics from Cannabis ruderalis, a subtype that originates from Russia and surrounding regions.
As well as blooming automatically, these plants have a much faster life cycle, resist pests and diseases efficiently, and maintain a small and stealthy size.
Are Autoflower Seeds Feminised?
Yes, our autoflower seeds are feminised to ensure exclusively female plants. However, autos differ from photoperiod genetics.
Whereas feminised photoperiod strains require a change in the light cycle to flower, autoflower plants do not.
The Advantages of Growing Autoflower Seeds
Autoflowering seeds offer a host of advantages that make them ideal for beginners and beloved by experienced growers:
- Hardy genetics: Autoflower weed seeds are forgiving of beginner error and handle neglect with resilience. Compared to photoperiod strains, they handle pests, diseases, and fluctuating temperatures exceptionally well.
- Compact and stealthy: Autoflowers are also suitable for small and enclosed spaces, as they typically grow to 60–100cm. Their stealthy nature makes them ideal for growers trying to keep a low profile.
- Fast harvests: On average, it takes 8–10 weeks for autoflower seeds to reach harvest. This trait also enables growers to achieve perpetual harvests throughout the growing season.
- Infused with top-tier genetics: Autoflower seeds offer the genetics of famous photoperiod varieties in an easy-to-grow and speedy format. Breeders have crossed the likes of Skunk, OG Kush, and Haze genetics with autoflower varieties.
Why Choose Autoflowering Seeds?
Many cultivators either start with or switch to autoflower seeds because of how easy they are to grow. Here are a few reasons growers choose autos above everything else:
- Low maintenance: They are quick to grow, thick-stemmed, and sturdy. They’ll be at home both in a premium growing tent and a partially shaded ditch.
- Less hungry: They also require fewer nutrients than the average photoperiod strain. A good-quality potting mix will see them through their 8–10-week life cycle, saving growers money on nutrients and compost.
- Convenient: Their small size means autoflower strains can be grown by those with limited space, reaching harvest in a matter of weeks. They’re ideal for balconies, terraces, and even windowsills.
Growers aren't the only ones who can benefit from autoflower weed seeds. Smokers also have a lot to gain from these speedy wonders:
- Lots of potency options: Autoflowers come in high-THC, medium-THC, and low-THC formats, making them a great choice for all types of smokers. Many new-school autos also feature high levels of CBD and other cannabinoids.
- Exceptional flavours and effects: With autoflowers, you can experience the prized flavour profiles and effects of some of the most classic cannabis strains. By infusing them with ruderalis to ensure the autoflowering trait, breeders have created autoflower seeds that are almost indistinguishable from the photoperiod originals when it comes time to sample the flowers.
What Kind of Soil Do Autoflower Seeds Need?
When selecting a potting soil for your plants, you’ll need to choose a light and airy substrate low in nutrients.
Aim for potting soil with the following ratio of materials:
- 3 parts peat moss
- 3 parts compost
- 2 parts perlite
- 1 part vermiculite
Autoflower cannabis also thrives in relatively small growing containers. Use your soil mix to fill up an 11-litre fabric pot.
You can either sow seeds directly into their final pot, or transplant 1–2-week-old seedlings from a germination tray into their final home.
How to Grow Autoflowering Seeds Indoors
Growing autoflower plants indoors gives growers more control over factors such as light and water.
Because autos aren’t responsive to light when it comes to flowering, cultivators can choose to keep the lights on for anywhere from 18–24 hours.
A light cycle of 18-6 will supply your plants with all of their energy needs while saving you some money on your electricity bill.
If costs don't concern you, keeping the lights on for 20–24 hours each day throughout the growing cycle could result in larger yields and faster growth.
How To Grow Outdoor Autoflower Seeds
Autoflowers are easy to grow outdoors during almost any time of the year.
Whereas photoperiod strains are beholden to the light cycle of the seasons, autos do their own thing. You can sow them from February to September and expect a harvest, provided you avoid any risk of frost.
We recommend sowing seeds in waves every few weeks across the growing season for a harvest every fortnight.
Growing in different areas of your garden will also help you understand where your cannabis plants perform the best, and where to concentrate your efforts next year.
The Perfect Humidity and Temperature for Your Autos
Although hardy, autoflower cannabis still requires certain temperatures and humidity levels to provide optimal results. Aim for these parameters:
- Temperature: 21°C
- Humidity during veg: 50–60%
- Humidity during flowering: 40%
What Kind of Nutrients Do Autoflowers Need?
Autos require fewer nutrients than their photoperiod counterparts. Because of their smaller size, they have less of a demand for minerals and elements that assist in the creation of energy, proteins, and other components of plant physiology.
As a rule, we suggest using half of the recommended dose when applying RQS products such as Easy Boost, Easy Grow, and Easy Bloom.
What Kind of Water Do Autoflower Strains Need?
Autoflower weed plants require water and nutrient solutions with a pH of 6–7 (when grown in soil). Use a pH meter to measure your preparations and apply pH up or down solutions to maintain an appropriate level.
When it comes to watering, be careful not to overdo things. Autos have a smaller root system than photoperiod strains and require much less water.
Make sure the growing medium is completely dry before watering; this will help to prevent root rot and suffocation.
Where To Buy the Best Autoflower Seeds?
There are hundreds of autoflowering strains available, and each one offers something different. You can use the RQS filter tools to help narrow down your search and make selecting autoflower seeds a whole lot easier.
Use the filter at the top left corner of the page to choose your desired size, THC level, height, yield, and flowering time. You can also use the “sort by” filter at the top right corner to check out the most popular cultivars.
Packages are available in 1, 3, 5, or 10 seeds. If you fancy trying different genetics, select the Autoflowering Mix.
If you’re a beginner and unsure where to start, we suggest using the Autoflowering Starter Kit for the easiest experience possible.
