SWEET ZZ: GENETIC ANALYSIS
Sweet ZZ stems from a family tree that features heavily indica-dominant and sativa-dominant ancestors. However, the indica side of its lineage became manifest in this cultivar—exactly what breeders here at Royal Queen Seeds were aiming for.
A GENETIC ANALYSIS OF THE RQS VERSION OF ZKITTLEZ
The breeding team developed an appetite for an indica that would outperform other strains in the domain of taste. Deep down, they wanted to replicate the legendary strain Zkittlez, but to an even greater degree. To achieve this goal, they had to hunt down capable parent stains.
First things first, they needed to decide on a strain to lay down an indica-dominant foundation. It didn’t take much testing before they recruited Grape Ape for the task at hand. The stoning indica exerts an almost overpowering body high that dissolves tension and uplifts the mood.
Grape Ape belongs to an impressive lineage of indica specimens, including Mendocino Purps and Afghani. Its earthy and peppery terpene profile also made it a superb candidate, bringing indica prowess along with attractive flavors.
Grape Ape’s large purple-green colas are loved far and wide in the cannabis community. They’ve received some impressive awards in their time, including first place in the Concentrate category at the High Times Medical Cup in 2011.
Grape Ape served as a great base for the operation, but our breeders didn’t want a flavor profile that already exists. They wanted to create something that would leave a real impression on smokers. To take the taste to the next level, they introduced Grapefruit to the experiment.
Grapefruit features a delectable terpene profile characterised by tastes of herbs, pepper, and pine. American breeders created this tasty variety at high altitudes in Colorado using the parent strain Cinderella 99.
Grapefruit’s sativa-dominant genetic profile failed to tip the scales when crossed with Grape Ape. However, Sweet ZZ did receive the full terpene profile.

Royal Queen Seeds breeders spent some time experimenting with these two parent strains. After multiple crosses, they were able to produce a stable phenotype. The progeny—accurately named Sweet ZZ—features a genetic makeup of 80% indica and only 20% sativa.
GROWING SWEET ZZ
Sweet ZZ is highly productive. Its dense and bushy canopy produces one huge central cola, flanked by smaller bud sites. However, growers can boost their harvest by employing techniques such as low-stress training.
Sweet ZZ offers a rewarding return both indoors and outdoors. You’ll achieve best results in a slightly warmer climate, but this hardy indica won’t exactly keel over when exposed to the cold.
Sweet ZZ produces tall flowers drenched in psychoactive resin. Its buds aren’t thin per se, but appear narrow due to their length.
Indoors, you can expect Sweet ZZ to peak at a height of 54.6 inches. However, it can easily be tamed to meet the demands of the space available. Use pruning and training to keep it as low to the ground as 31.2 inches. Indoor plants provide a fantastic yield of 19.4 – 21.2 oz/m² after a brief flowering time of 7–9 weeks.
Outdoor plants climb to a taller peak height of 2m. The strain’s sativa genetics shine through when Sweet ZZ is given adequate space. If you’re looking to stay low-key, use LST and topping to keep it at around 62.4 inches. Prepare to harvest a rewarding yield of 17.6 – 19.4 oz during late September.
EFFECTS OF SWEET ZZ
Novice smokers should approach Sweet ZZ sensibly. Its potentially overpowering indica effects—and THC content of 22%—aren’t to be taken lightly. Even experienced stoners might be taken aback by just how fast this strain can stone a sober mind.
Smoke these flowers when you’re seeking a soothing and calming effect. You’ll feel the weight lifted from your shoulders moments after this terpene-rich smoke kisses your lips.
It only takes a few tokes to conquer stress. You’ll need another few if you want to feel the full force of Sweet ZZ's sedating effects.
As you can probably tell, it’s not the kind of strain to reach for during a wake and bake session. Instead, enjoy these pacifying flowers in the evening after a long day at work. Smoke them before bed or with your smoking buddies for a relaxing evening of quiet conversation.
The strain’s high THC level is enough to blitz most smokers. However, a minority might want to push the boat out further. Use these buds to whip up a batch of brownies or space cakes to initiate a much stronger experience.
TASTE AND AROMA
Sweet ZZ inherited the best elements of its parents’ terpene profiles. Every hit douses the taste buds with flavors of candy, sweetness, pine, earth, and pepper.
Its buds feature high levels of the terpenes myrcene, pinene, and caryophyllene. Aside from contributing to its pleasant tastes, these terpenes also offer anti-inflammatory and sedating effects.
SWEET ZZ: HIGH THC LEVELS, TASTY TERPENES, AMAZING YIELDS
RQS breeders accomplished their goal with Sweet ZZ. It offers a deeply stoning indica high and an alluring terpene profile. Its hardy genetics make it a good introductory photoperiod strain, and its massive yield makes Sweet ZZ all the more rewarding to cultivate.
SWEET ZZ AUTOMATIC
This superb strain is also available in autoflowering format. Sweet ZZ Automatic boasts most of the winning traits of the original strain, along with a faster flowering time. Breeders created this vigorous variety by breeding Sweet ZZ with Diesel Auto.
Easy to grow and ideal for beginners, this auto churns out compact buds loaded with sweet and citrusy terpenes. She provides less of a psychoactive hit than the original, with a THC value of around 18%. However, her indica effects still linger for hours at a time; only you’ll remain more functional.
You’ll be harvesting Sweet ZZ Automatic a mere 8–9 weeks after putting seeds in the soil. Indoor plants yield 12.3 – 14.1 oz/m² and maintain an easily manageable height of 2.3 – 3.9 feet. Outdoor plants grow to a taller average height of 3.3 – 3.9 feet and reward growers with 3.2 – 6.2 oz.
