Growing cannabis indoors has unique advantages and disadvantages. Cultivators have almost complete control over the environment, and can easily regulate light, water, and nutrients. However, space can quickly become an issue, especially when growing strains that like to reach rapidly toward the light source.
Fortunately, breeders have tinkered with cannabis genetics to create varieties that are ideal for indoor growing. These plants remain short, and are easy to manage and train. They’re suitable for small grow tents, and some cultivators even go to the extremes of raising them in refurbished computer towers and cupboards for added stealth.
Why Grow Cannabis Indoors?
Indoor growing makes life easier for many cannabis cultivators. If you live in a cold climate with bad weather, or your garden lacks direct sunlight, indoor grow tents provide a safe haven. The ability to manipulate the light schedule, humidity, and nutrients with precision allows growers to raise weed on their own terms.
Growing cannabis indoors also helps weed lovers keep their herbal interest to themselves. Indoor grow tents with carbon filters will eliminate the stink and dramatically reduce the chances of facing any penalties.
Are All Weed Strains Suitable for Indoor Grows?
Technically, yes. All strains can be grown indoors—although some varieties are much more suited to this environment than others. Bushy indica and autoflowering strains rarely exceed 120cm in height, and are thus naturally compatible with small spaces.
Indoor growing also allows cultivators to take control of time (to a degree, at least). Photoperiod cannabis varieties begin to flower only when the hours of light decrease leading up to fall. Indoors, growers can change the light cycle to trigger flowering whenever they want. Alternatively, they can extend the growth phase by keeping plants under a veg-specific light cycle.
Towering sativa strains have the potential to surge to heights of 300cm. Growers can limit vertical growth by planting them in small containers, but they won’t produce as good of a yield as strains specifically bred for indoor cultivation.
If you’re planning to grow weed indoors, consider the strains below. They’re ideal for small spaces and produce fantastic harvests.
1. Enjoy Jar-Filling Yields With Blue Gelato
When our breeders crossed the legendary Blueberry, Thin Mint GSC, and Sunset Sherbet, we had our suspicions that they were onto something. But little did we know that they were on the path to creating our favorite cut of Gelato to date! Packed with a complex mix of terpenes, Blue Gelato's aroma is sweet and fruit-forward with berry highlights, an earthy backdrop, and a touch of gas that really takes things to another level.
Thanks to her compact size, excellent branching, and fast flowering time, Blue Gelato is perfect for growing indoors. Left to veg for 3‒4 weeks in standard pots, mature Blue Gelato plants will typically measure between 80‒130 cm after stretching. Given her resilience, Blue Gelato responds extremely well to training and is naturally resilient to pests. Meanwhile, her stable genes make Blue Gelato a great candidate for SOG setups, where a few smaller plants can develop a beautiful, lush canopy that delivers heavy harvests of top-shelf flower. In ideal conditions, our Blue Gelato can deliver 550‒600 g/m² after 9‒10 weeks in bloom.
True to her 80% indica genes, Blue Gelato boasts an exceptional flower structure. Her buds are naturally rock hard, with thick, swollen calyxes, bright red pistils, and a nice length, too. Crack open your curing jars and enjoy as Blue Gelato's sweet, fruity aroma fills the air. Then, once you light up, sit back and let her soothing yet balanced stone wash over your mind and body.

Its moderate internodal spacing and high stress resilience make this strain perfect for all kinds of training, from simple defoliation to LST, ScrOG, and more. As you'd expect from any real Skunk, Lemon Skunk needs little more than water, occasional feeding, and strong lights to flourish. After her short bloom phase comes to an end, she can deliver up to 600‒650 g/m².

Featuring a unique mix of terpenes, Lemon Skunk produces delicious aromas that combine a classic skunky stank with sweet citrus overtones reminiscent of freshly squeezed lemon-lime juice. 3. Pink Runtz: Monumental Levels of THC Await
Love sweet terpenes? Then you'll love our Pink Runtz! Created from a cross of Gelato, Zkittlez, and Pink Panties, this 50-50 hybrid condenses the bold candy aromas/flavors that made Runtz so famous in a seed that's perfect for indoor tents or rooms. While not the highest-yielding variety on this list, Pink Runtz' delicious candy-fruit terps will be more than enough to get you hooked and keep you growing this strain for many years to come!
Pink Runtz boasts an even split of indica and sativa genes and combines typical traits from both genetic families. On the one hand, she develops beautiful deep-green, fat-fingered leaves that fast-track photosynthesis even in sub-par conditions. On the other hand, Pink Runtz develops long branches and widely spaced nodes that make her an exceptional candidate for a variety of training techniques (LST, topping, and super cropping in particular). She also stretches considerably, with mature Pink Runtz plants typically maxing out at 100‒150 cm—a little tall for some setups, but nothing that a bit of extra training can't help contain. Her flowering time, however, is just 8‒9 weeks, after which Pink Runtz plants can deliver up to 425‒475 g/m² in optimal conditions. In comparison to the other strains mentioned here, Pink Runtz tends to benefit from a bit of extra feeding.
By the time she's ready for the chop, Pink Runtz will be heavily laden with nugs boasting nice sativa length and a dense indica structure. Despite her name, Pink Runtz tends to produce vibrant green flowers with a frosty coat of trichomes that's rich in terpenes and up to 26% THC. Her aromas are completely dominated by notes of sweet, tropical fruit candy with hints of diesel and citrus, while her effects hit hard and deliver an uplifting, long-lasting stone ideal for experienced smokers.

4. Prepare to Enter Hyperspace — Alien OG
Alien OG is arguably one of the hottest strains in the US at the moment. Bred from Alien Kush and Tahoe OG Kush, this hybrid boasts whopping THC levels, dank aromas, and excellent vigour. Within weeks of sowing seeds, you'll be growing lush hybrid plants that are perfectly suited for indoor spaces, thanks to their compact structure and fast flowering time.
Alien OG plants grow very quickly, easily reaching 30 cm after just 3‒4 weeks in veg. They boast large, forest green leaves with a typical hybrid shape, as well as moderately spaced nodes that allow easy access to her stems when training, pruning, or trimming. After stretching considerably during their first weeks of bloom, mature Alien OG plants typically measure 80‒120 cm—a very manageable height in almost all tents/rooms. Thanks to her short stature and homogenous growth traits, this is another great strain for SOG setups. Once in bloom, leave Alien OG to mature for roughly 8‒10 weeks to enjoy her dense, potent flowers at their best.
After drying and curing, Alien OG buds boast a delicious aroma that's dominated by notes of fresh pine, moist earth, and ripe citrus rinds. 5. Keep Things Chill With Legendary OG Punch
They say that legends aren't born—they're created. And with our iconic creation, Legendary OG Punch, never has this statement rung truer! Born from a cross of Legend OG and Purple Punch, this 60% indica-dominant strain comes packed with delicious terpenes that create a complex aroma of berries, grapes, and lavender topped with citric overtones and an earthy-pine backdrop. Her effects are also nice and mild—ideal for smokers looking for a chill buzz.
Legendary OG Punch is easy to cultivate and well-suited to indoor tents or rooms, though her height may prove challenging for some growers. After vegging for 3‒4 weeks and finishing her flowering stretch, Legendary OG Punch can measure between 90‒160 cm. Hence, we generally recommend this strain for experienced growers who are comfortable employing training techniques to control the height of their plants. LST, topping, and FIM are all great techniques for taming Legendary OG Punch's stretch. Thanks to her long internodes, she also performs exceptionally well in ScrOG setups. In optimal conditions, Legendary OG Punch needs about 9 weeks of bloom time to mature fully and can produce up to 400 g/m².
Come harvest time, Legendary OG Punch will reward you with dense indica nuggets covered in frosty resin and packed with exotic terpenes. When grown in cooler conditions, her tightly stacked calyxes may take on beautiful pink and purple hues that only add to her bag appeal. With her excellent trichome production, Legendary OG Punch is a great strain for making extracts, and, with 19% THC, she delivers a mild stone that's relaxing and clear-headed.
